Transportation Tips for Oakville and the GTA

Nestled between Mississauga and Burlington, Oakville is just a car, bus, train, or (scenic) bike ride away from where you need to go.

Downtown Toronto is about 35km away—around a 30-minute drive down The QEW and Gardiner Expressway (depending on traffic), or hop on the GO Transit Lakeshore West line and get to Union Station without having to worry about traffic. Highways 403 and 407 are also easily accessible to get you to and from Oakville.

Once the weather dries up, take advantage of the on- and off-road trails that let you cycle, in-line skate, or walk along the lakeside and wind through the many lush parks that connects the coastline cities.

Thinking of a road trip? Look no further.
Niagara Falls (and the United States border) is an hour by car. Explore the sprawling cascades with your family, the wineries of Vineland or Niagara-on-the-Lake with friends and partners (Megalomaniac—John Howard’s Cellars of Distinction is a great find), or take the kids to the indoor waterpark resort at Great Wolf Lodge. And don’t leave without stopping at Hershey’s Chocolate World!

If travelling by plane is more your speed, you’re in luck! Being right next to Mississauga makes getting to Toronto’s Person International Airport just 20 minutes away.

In the core of Oakville, the town’s own system of buses creates Oakville Transit, which has been getting people around for almost five decades. The Weekday Route Map spans the entire length of Oakville and conveniently connects you to the VIA Rail and Go Transit stops, Downtown Oakville, and many Recreational Activities.

Smart Commute Initiative is offered by Go Transit, and boasts “secure bike lockers,” emergency rides home and a carpooling service.

As for getting to school, Oakville is part of the Halton Region—along with Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills—, thus, Halton Student Transportation Services operates to all institutes under both the Halton Catholic District School Board and the Halton District School Board.

The Oakville app—available for both iPhone and Android—is a great way to plan your trips and stay up to date (with real-time bus tracking) while getting around town!
